GSMD INSIGNIA

There are seven medals offered to General Society of Mayflower Descendant members. They include the membership medal, a miniature member medal, the junior member medal, the state or colony officer medal, a past state Governor medal, the general society state officer medal, and a former general society officer medal. Curved bars are not interchangeable between these medals, as there are differences in the purposes for the medals. Members generally wear three or fewer of these medals at one time.

Member medals come with a straight gold top bar engraved with the member's state. Curved ancestor bars may be attached below on the ribbon.

A miniature member medal may be worn when representing the society at ceremonial occasions. Junior members up to the age of 25 years may wear the Junior Member medal.

State officer medals come with a straight gold top bar engraved with the officer's state. Curved state officer bars listing state offices held may be attached below on the ribbon. If officer is a colony officer, the first curved bar below the state bar and state offices held should be a colony name bar, followed by colony offices held attached below that.

The Past State Governor medal comes with two straight bars. The top bar is engraved Past Governor with the state engraved on the bar below. Many societies buy this medal with society funds and give to a Governor at the end of his or her term. The Past Governor may want to attach curved bars showing other state offices held on the ribbon of this medal, wearing it in place of a state officer medal.

General Society state officer medals come with a straight gold top bar engraved GSMD. Curved Deputy Governor General, Assistant General, or GSMD chair bars should be attached below on the ribbon.

Former GSMD officer medals are for those who have served at the national level. The medal comes with two straight top bars. The top bar is engraved with the office held and the straight bar below is engraved GSMD. A former Governor General has a separate and distinct 'former officer' medal.

A straight attachable state bar is available that fits over the top of the ribbon on older model medals. Also available is a top bar engraved with a state name, with ribbon and a small ring at the bottom ready to attach to an older medal.

ETIQUETTE

All of the above ribbons are to be worn by members only. A genealogy medal should be worn only at meetings and should not be worn in public. Only the miniature member medal can be worn in public when representing the Mayflower Society at ceremonial occasions. It may be placed alongside other miniature medals from other societies.

All medals should be placed in a row across the heart. The officer medal with the highest office held should be on the left, as viewed by another person. In the middle would be the state officer medal and to the right, the membership medal. Whether wearing one, two, or three medals, all should be in a straight row and balanced over the heart.

Curved bars are not interchangeable between medals and should only be attached to the medals indicated above. Curved bars should not be attached to miniature or junior member medals.

Both ladies and gentlemen may wear the society Rosette. Both ladies and gentlemen may wear the society Recognition Pin. Charms are available for necklace, bracelet, brooch, or watch fob. All may be worn at meetings or in public.
